Chapter 1198 · Elbaf Arc

Luffy's New Form

The ape-like transformation that closes Chapter 1198

No official name yetChapter 1198 · Elbaf Arc

On the last pages of Chapter 1198, Luffy reappears on a rooftop in the Giant Village with black hair, fangs, a tail and an ape's muzzle — and he does not say a word. Oda gives the form no name, no explanation and no full-body panel. Here is everything the chapter actually shows, kept separate from everything readers have guessed.

Appearance

Black hair, fangs and a tail

The contrast does most of the work. Gear 5 is white hair, a grin and a cartoon's freedom of movement. This is the opposite palette: black hair, a heavy brow, an ape's muzzle and a mouth built around fangs. Read as a silhouette, it looks like an animal standing where a person should be.

Oda does not give it a hero shot. Luffy appears from behind and from the side, crouched on a roof in the Giant Village, watching Zaza MMA. The dramatic reveal panel in this chapter went to Loki's hybrid form instead. That choice is why the question 'what does it actually look like' still has no clean answer — the chapter shows enough to recognise him and not enough to draw him.

The giants finish the job. When Luffy drops into the fight, the villagers do not shout his name. They ask who that is. In a village that has watched this pirate since he arrived, nobody places him.

Behaviour

What the form actually does

Luffy does not speak in this state. The chapter gives him animal noise only, which is a strange thing to do to the loudest character in the series and is almost certainly the point.

His first move is the most direct kill in the entire run. He lands on Zaza MMA, grabs her water body and bites until it bursts. No named attack, no stretching gag, no punchline. For a character whose signature is inventing silly names for serious hits, the absence of a name is the loudest part.

The timing matters as much as the act. Loki notes that he never expected Luffy to run in the middle of the fight against Imu. So this is not a power-up that arrives because Luffy is losing — it arrives after he left the battlefield, off-screen, with Gaban and Usopp wondering where he went.

Naming

Does the form have an official name?

No. Nothing in Chapter 1198 names it — no transformation call-out, no title card, no line of dialogue. Every label below was attached to the form afterwards, by readers, outlets or the fandom. They are useful for searching and unreliable as fact.

Monkey King / Sun Wukong

Fan name

The most popular label worldwide, and the easiest to justify. Luffy's fruit is the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and Nika was already drawn from the same trickster-deity well as Sun Wukong. A monkey-shaped Luffy makes a reference that was always half-there fully literal.

Black Nika

Media name

A media label that reads the black hair as a dark mirror of Gear 5's white. It is a clean search term and a fair description of the palette, but the chapter never uses the word Nika in this scene.

Gear 6

Speculation

The shortcut everyone reaches for. Oda has not numbered this form, and a new Gear is normally announced on the page with a shout and a full-body spread. Neither happens here.

Gear Death

Meme

A long-running fan joke about a feral counterpart to Gear 5. It reads like an official name because it is catchy, not because anything in the chapter supports it.

Descriptive

The safest options, and the ones used on this page. They describe what is on the page without claiming to know something Oda has not said.

If Chapter 1199 gives the form a name, this page will be updated the same day. Until then, treat every proper noun above as shorthand rather than canon.

Context

Is this a Zoan awakening?

Gaban gives the only in-chapter explanation, and it is one line: that kid is a Zoan-type. It is not a throwaway. Luffy's fruit was revealed to be the Mythical Zoan Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and Gear 5 is that fruit's awakening. A second, more animal shape is therefore not a new power system bolted on — it is the same fruit showing a different face.

The silence fits the same reading. Awakened Zoans in One Piece gradually lose ground to the animal inside them. On Egghead, Shaka explained that an awakening pushes the user toward the personality of the creature, and the Jailer Beasts of Impel Down are the standing example. A Luffy who growls instead of talking is exactly what that rule predicts.

“That kid… he's a Zoan-type…”

Gaban, Chapter 1198

What Shaka said about awakened Zoans

On Egghead, Shaka explained that awakening a Zoan tends to pull the user's personality toward the animal's. The Jailer Beasts of Impel Down are the case study: four awakened guards who lost themselves to their fruits and became their animals first, wardens second. Luffy's silence in Chapter 1198 is the first time the pattern has appeared in him.

Comparison

Why it looks like Dragon Ball's Great Ape

The tail, the muzzle and the fangs sent readers straight to Goku. The comparison is obvious enough that it dominated reaction threads within hours of the leaks, and it is not wrong — both characters draw on the same mythic material, and a monkey with a tail is a monkey with a tail.

But the mechanics are different. The Great Ape is a species-wide transformation triggered by the moon. Luffy's shape is a Devil Fruit showing another layer of itself, with no moon, no external trigger and no loss of identity beyond the loss of speech.

There is also a joke hiding in plain sight. His name has been Monkey D. Luffy since chapter one. Oda waited roughly twelve hundred chapters to draw the obvious thing.

What happens next

Chapter 1198 closes on the giants asking who he is, and then a break. Chapter 1199 arrives on November 23, 2026, and it is the chapter most likely to name the form, show it in full, or explain what Imu meant about needing to return to Mary Geoise or risk his own life. This page will be updated when it does.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Luffy's new form called?

Nothing official. Chapter 1198 gives the form no name, no title card and no transformation call-out. Monkey King, Black Nika, Gear 6 and Gear Death are all labels added afterwards by readers and outlets, not by Eiichiro Oda.

Does Luffy turn into a monkey in Chapter 1198?

He takes an ape-like shape: black hair, an ape's muzzle, fangs and a long tail. Whether the story treats him as literally a monkey is unconfirmed — Gaban only says he is a Zoan-type, and the form is shown from behind and in part.

Is this Gear 6?

Nothing in the chapter calls it Gear 6. A new Gear is normally announced on the page with a named shout and a full-body spread; this form gets neither, which suggests either a name is being withheld or it is not a numbered Gear at all.

Why doesn't Luffy talk in this form?

The chapter gives him animal sounds only. That matches what Shaka said on Egghead about awakened Zoans pushing the user's personality toward the animal, the same pattern that produced the Jailer Beasts of Impel Down.

What does the new form do?

It bites. Luffy drops onto the rain deity Zaza MMA, grabs her water body and bites until she bursts — no named attack, no stretching gag. It is the most direct kill he has been given in the series.

When will the form be explained?

Chapter 1199 releases on November 23, 2026, after a scheduled break. That is the earliest point at which Oda could name the form, show it in full or explain how it relates to Gear 5.
