Chapter guide
What happens in this chapter
Chapter 1196 takes the fight inside Sanji's head. Killingham, wearing his hybrid form and wrapped in Omen, does not need to out-hit him — he needs Sanji to hesitate for one second, and the way to get that is to hand him his worst memory.
The nightmare is Kamabakka Kingdom: two years of running from people who loved him badly, with Ivankov at the centre as the one figure Sanji could never face down. Oda runs the flashback long enough that it stops being a gag and starts being a diagnosis. Ivankov's verdict is the thesis of the whole arc: Sanji's weakness was never that he was too weak. It was that he did not think he was worth saving.
Once Sanji accepts that, the nightmare loses its grip. He walks back into the fight with his confidence intact and his guard up, and the chapter ends on the promise of a real answer — which 1197 delivers. A one-week break follows, moving the series to a November 1 slot.
Key moments
Killingham's armour
Omen hardens into a shell that ordinary Armament Haki cannot cut, forcing Sanji to look for a different answer entirely.
The Kamabakka flashback
Two years compressed into a handful of pages, and Ivankov's warning that a man who does not value himself cannot protect anyone.
The nightmare dissolves
Sanji does not beat the illusion. He stops believing it, which is the harder version of the same victory.
Hand-off to 1197
The chapter ends with Sanji standing his ground and the fight still open — the exact position Chapter 1197 picks up from.
