One Piece Chapter 1198 summary: what actually happens

Chapter summaryShow the summaryHide the summary

The chapter runs in five beats, in the order they land on the page. With the chapter out, every point below is confirmed rather than leaked.

Sanji finishes the job

Chapter 1197 ended on a kick that cracked Killingham's Omen armour without closing the fight. 1198 opens with the follow-through: the armour goes, the Holy Knight goes with it, and the man who spent two chapters lecturing Sanji about weakness ends the chapter running. It is the same picture Oda drew when Sommers fled from Zoro — a God's Knight discovering that a Straw Hat is not a wall you can posture against.

Zaza MMA gives up an arm for the children

The rain deity Killingham pulled out of his Kirin fruit is still wrapped around the ship with Elbaf's stolen children aboard. She does not hand them over gently. She tears off one of her own arms and throws the children clear with it. In a chapter this loud, it is a startlingly quiet image, and the clearest sign yet of what Elbaf has already paid.

Imu reveals a third form

The figure on the Empty Throne has only ever been shown in fragments — a shadow, a hand, an eye. Here Imu steps further into view as something with an elongated torso, a long neck and enormous horns. Readers who have been tracing the Harley mural will notice the silhouette drifting closer to the devil painted on it.

Loki transforms, and loses in one blow

Five chapters of build-up pay off as the prince of Elbaf finally fights in full hybrid Zoan form. Imu presses him about the ancient technology hidden on the island, gets nothing, compliments his strength — then ends the fight with a single strike. Loki's last line is about Luffy, who left the battlefield without explanation.

Luffy comes back as something else

Gaban and Usopp are still asking where he went when the scene cuts to a rooftop: black hair, a tail, fangs, an ape's muzzle. He drops onto Zaza and bites her apart. Gaban's read is immediate and unsentimental — whatever Luffy is now, it is a Zoan.

Luffy's Form

Page order follows the official release. Volume printings can still adjust small details.

Recap

How we got here

Two chapters of Sanji versus Killingham, and the reason Elbaf's finale arrives with this much weight behind it.

Chapter 1197 — Love Is Defense

Sanji's answer to Killingham was never going to be armour. 1197 spent its pages on the idea that the cook's weakness was never strength but self-worth, then paid it off with a spinning back kick wrapped in Conqueror's Haki that shattered the Holy Knight's spear and helmet. By the final panel Killingham is bleeding out of the fight and Sanji has stopped apologising for existing.

Chapter 1196 — There's No Worth in a Love That Longs for Death

Killingham's cruellest trick was never physical: he rebuilt Sanji's two years in Kamabakka Kingdom as a nightmare, with Ivankov as the thing Sanji could not face. The flashback did the quiet work — Ivankov's lesson that a man who does not value himself cannot defend anyone — and Sanji walked back into the fight with the nightmare dismantled. A one-week break followed, which is why 1197 landed in November rather than October.

What comes after Chapter 1198

A break follows this chapter, so there is no new One Piece on the following Sunday. Chapter 1199 lands on November 23, 2026 — the chapter most likely to name Luffy's new form or show it in full. This page is updated when it does.

Editorial

Why The Island of Monsters matters

Oda has spent the Elbaf arc asking a single question in different keys: what does a god look like once you finally see one? Chapter 1198 is where the answer stops being metaphorical. Imu's third form is not a silhouette on a throne any more, Loki's hybrid is not a rumour, and Luffy is not the grinning rubber boy the fleet thinks it is following.

The structure of the chapter is telling. Three transformations land in roughly the same number of pages, and each one moves someone's ceiling: Sanji proves a Straw Hat can break a God's Knight, Imu proves a God's Knight is nothing beside him, and Luffy proves the captain has a floor nobody has measured. That is a lot of ladder to build in one issue, and exactly the kind of ladder Oda likes to kick away afterwards.

There is a quieter thread too. Zaza's arm, the children thrown clear, Loki asked about ancient technology while his island burns: Elbaf's finale is being written as a cost ledger, not a victory lap. Whatever 1199 does with the break, the arc has already told us that winning here will look like surviving.
